An animated film adaptation of MediEvil was in development at PlayStation Productions in the early 2020s. Writing duo Ben Mekler and Christopher Amick, best known for their work on animated television series such as Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts and Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight, were attached to the project. The film was set to feature original songs by Tenacious D; Mekler and Amick previously worked together with Tenacious D member Jack Black on the aforementioned Kung Fu Panda show. As of 2025, the adaptation was no longer in production.
History
PlayStation Productions, a production studio for developing films and television shows based on PlayStation's intellectual properties, was launched on May 20, 2019.[1] Nearly a year later, on April 7, 2020, writer Ben Mekler expressed interest in adapting MediEvil on Twitter.[2] A day later, Mike Mika of Other Ocean offered to help make it a reality.[3]
On July 7, 2023, PlayStation Productions posted their new intro video on their website.[4] A month later, X (formerly Twitter) user @realradec noticed that Sir Dan was in the intro. Ben Mekler and Christopher Amick reposted @realradec's post, teasing their involvement and confirming that a MediEvil project was in the works at PlayStation Productions.[5][6][7]
A year later, on July 16, 2024, Jack Black announced that Tenacious D are going on hiatus, putting all their creative plans on hold.[8] It is unclear whether this affected the adaptation or not.
On June 4, 2025, Ben Mekler confirmed that the adaptation got close to being made, but was no longer in production.[9]
