The chess pieces are living chess game objects used for the final puzzle of the Asylum Grounds.
History
MediEvil
They are magical, life-sized, talking chess pieces moving in the same directions as in actual chess. To solve the chess puzzle, Dan must hit them with his weapon to make them move until they land on the square that matches their colour. Once all the pieces are in place, the hidden entrance to the asylum will open in the centre of the chessboard.
There are four chess pieces:
King
The king is a chess piece that can move in any direction, similarly to the queen. The square tile that corresponds to the king's colour is blue.
Queen
The queen is a chess piece that can move in any direction, similarly to the king. The square tile that corresponds to the queen's colour is red.
Bishop
The bishop is a chess piece that can only move diagonally. The square tile that corresponds to the bishop's colour is green.
Rook
The rook is a chess piece that can only move vertically or horizontally. The square tile that corresponds to the rook's colour is yellow.
Behind the scenes
Development
In the MediEvil Rolling Demo, while all the chess pieces are mostly the same, their voices are not implemented yet. After completing the chess puzzle, the hidden entrance takes Dan into underground tunnels which were replaced by the level exit in the final game release.[1]
