The Swamp Guardian was going to be a boss in one of the game's mud-themed levels.<ref name="blog"/> Concept art reveals that the boss fight would have taken place on top of his head. Dan had to destroy all of the guardian's eyes in order to defeat him. This was complicated by tentacle tongues lashing out at Dan from the guardian's many mouths as well as the opening at the top of the guardian's head, which Dan could get sucked into. It is unknown whether the tentacles in the Pools of the Ancient Dead level were always intended to be the Swamp Guardian's or whether this is entirely an invention of the 2019 remake of the game.
