Soldier despawn is a glitch in the original MediEvil. It is only known to work under certain conditions. Versions of the ePSXe emulator, such as 2.0.0 and below, are known to be well suited for executing it. The glitch is used to get a significant advantage during the Fazguls fight in Zarok's Lair.
How it works
This glitch involves several steps:
- Approach the central area, and perform the inventory glitch to reach the circular platform in the middle of the arena.
- If done properly, the inventory will reopen and the Fazguls will not come out of the doors in the cutscene.
- After Zarok's speech, close the inventory when the camera switches back to Dan.
- Continue the fight as usual.
- As soon as the last Fazgul dies, you must run into the top half and spawn the rest of the Fazguls. Instead of fighting, they still start cheering with your soldiers, and you will have completed the glitch.
During the fight, only half of the Fazguls will spawn, giving you a significant advantage and removing the need of healing your soldiers. You have to stay within the lower half of the room. Moving in the top half will cause the rest of the soldiers to spawn while the battle is still ongoing.
Although it is possible to perform most of this glitch on console or other emulators, when trying to complete it by spawning the rest of the soldiers, the game will crash unless using ePSXe version 2.0.0 or below. The reason why this happens is unknown, but it is speculated that it is caused by differences in how the memory is managed by the platforms used.
You can technically perform the glitch partially on other platforms as well, but you have to spawn the second half of the soldiers before the last Fazgul dies and continue fighting the second group.
Trivia
- One of the main reasons for the emulator of choice for speedrunning the original MediEvil being ePSXe 2.0.0 is because this glitch can be performed more reliably on this emulator, with 2.0.0 being the last version where it doesn't result in a crash.
- This glitch also affects the choice of BIOS to be
SCPH1001
on emulators. It is the only known BIOS that properly allows Dan's soldiers to fight. With other BIOSes, some or all soldiers might refuse to fight and move, causing inconsistencies when executing the glitch.
