The Fortesque family was a noble family living in Gallowmere. Buck teeth were a known Fortesque familial trait.[1]

History

In the 13th century, the head of the family, Lord Cedric Fortesque, was the richest nobleman in the land.[2] His eldest son, Sir Daniel Fortesque, would go on to become the Captain of the Militia and eventually the Hero of Gallowmere.[2][3] The family line came to an end centuries later in 1945, when the last Fortesque, Colonel Freddie, died at sea.

Development

MediEvil 2 was originally going to feature a descendant of Sir Daniel Fortesque as the main protagonist – Sir Henry Fortesque.[7]

Etymology

Fortesque is likely derived from the surname Fortescue (meaning "strong shield"). Fortescues trace their origins to Richard Le Fort who allegedly defended William the Conqueror with a shield at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.[8]
