The Fortesque family was a noble family living in Gallowmere. Buck teeth were a known Fortesque familial trait.[1]

    History

    13th century

In the 13th century, the head of the family, Lord Cedric Fortesque, was the richest nobleman in the land.[2] His eldest son, Sir Daniel Fortesque, would go on to become the Captain of the Militia and eventually the Hero of Gallowmere.[2][3]

Men from the Fortesque family continued to fight for Britain across the world, dying in the Battle of Agincourt, the Battle of Waterloo, and the Battle of Dunkirk. The family line eventually came to an end in 1945, when the last Fortesque, Colonel Freddie, died at sea.[4]

    Behind the scenes

    Development

MediEvil 2 was originally going to feature a descendant of Sir Daniel Fortesque as the main protagonist – Sir Henry Fortesque.[7]

    Etymology

Fortesque is likely derived from the surname Fortescue (meaning "strong shield"). Fortescues trace their origins to Richard Le Fort who allegedly defended William the Conqueror with a shield at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.[8]

    Notes

    1. Bertie's brother Freddie is said to be the "last of the Fortesque line." For this to be true, Bertie must have passed away before Freddie. It is possible that he is the Fortesque who passed away at the Battle of Dunkirk, but this is unconfirmed.
