The Fortesque family was a noble family living in Gallowmere. In the 13th century, the head of the family, Lord Cedric Fortesque, was the richest nobleman in the land.[1] His eldest son, Sir Daniel Fortesque, would go on to become the Captain of the Militia and eventually the Hero of Gallowmere.[1][2]

- Fortesque is likely derived from the surname Fortescue (meaning "strong shield"). Fortescues trace their origins to Richard Le Fort who allegedly defended William the Conqueror with a shield at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.[7]
