MediEvil/Glitches

From Gallowpedia, the MediEvil Wiki. You'll be dying to read!

This page details some of the glitches found in the original MediEvil and its 2019 remake.

    Inventory glitch

When SELECT is pressed, the inventory will open. This is used to select weapons and items. Pressing SELECT again then closes the inventory. If you open the inventory and then close it quickly (double tap), there is a brief window where commands can be input, allowing Sir Dan to move, jump, attack etc. When the inventory is open, Dan is invulnerable. This glitch is useful with regards to level looping, jacoghosting, soldiers despawning, and skipping Kardok.

    Level looping

    Main article: Level looping

This glitch is widely used by speedrunners. There are multiple uses of level looping in the game. Some are used to skip to the exit of a level. Others are used to skip an enemy encounter or an area of a level which should be completed to progress.

    Void launch

    Knockback dash

Also known as the KBD. The club's power-up attack (pressing Square button with button layout 1) can be used on walls and certain objects to push Dan back. That, in conjunction with turning, the Daring Dash, and running, can increase Dan's speed much higher than normal. Performing the glitch requires high precision, therefore it is considered an advanced technique by speedrunnners and not recommended for beginners.

    Super weapons

    Main article: Super weapons

The super weapons glitch can be performed with the club and the throwing daggers to deal more damage faster than they are intended to.

    Jacoghosting

    Main article: Jacoghosting

This glitch can be performed in the Pools Of The Ancient Dead level in the original MediEvil. It is mainly used to skip the majority of the level.

    Smuggling

    Main article: Smuggling

Smuggling can be performed in any level in the original MediEvil, as well as its 2019 remake. It consists of collecting items (such as Rune Stones) in one level in order to use them in another. Normally, key items are not meant to be used outside the level in which they are collected.

    Dragon Gate Skip

The Dragon Gate Skip, or DGS, is one of the hardest glitches to perform in the original MediEvil. There are four known ways to perform it:

    1. You can lure the mummy nearby to attack you in front of the gate. Sometimes, the attack allows you to clip through the gate. This method has been discontinued in favor of the other 3 methods because it is highly inconsistent and difficult to perform.
    2. You can use the Knockback Dash (KBD) glitch to launch yourself past the gate using a gap in the top left side of it. You can now collect the Star Rune and use the same gap with another KBD to leave the area. Effectively, you need to skip the gate twice.
    3. You can use the above mentioned gap to get past the gate, and then clip through the floor to reach the exit of the level. This method is known as Gallows Gauntlet Skip, or GGS.
    4. You can use the smuggling glitch (see above) to get the Star Rune from Dan's Crypt and use it in The Gallows Gauntlet's exit gate.

The DGS is highly precise and difficult, therefore is considered a very advanced technique by speedrunners. Beginners are recommended to use the rune smuggling to skip the gate.

    Soldiers despawn

This glitch involves several steps, and it can be performed on the original MediEvil using the ePSXe 2.0.0 emulator. In Zarok's Lair, after entering the arena, approach the central area, and perform the inventory glitch (see above). While closing the inventory and reopening it, move forward to step on the circular platform. If done properly, the Fazguls will not come out of the doors in the cutscene. After Zarok's speech, you need to close the inventory when the camera switches back to Dan. You can now continue the fight as usual, but only half of the Fazguls will spawn in the room, giving you a big advantage and not requiring you to heal your soldiers at all.

During the fight, you have to stay within the lower half of the room. Moving in the top half will cause the rest of the soldiers to spawn while the battle is still ongoing.

As soon as the last Fazgul dies, you must run into the top half and spawn the rest of the Fazguls. Instead of fighting, they still start cheering with your soldiers, and you will have completed the glitch.

Although it is possible to perform most of this glitch on console or other emulators, when trying to complete it by spawning the rest of the soldiers, the game will crash unless using ePSXe 2.0.0. The reason why this happens is unknown, but it is speculated that it is caused by differences in how the memory is managed by the platforms used.

    Kardok skip

    Weapon replenishment

It is possible to perform a glitch after your weapon is stolen that involves tricking the game into maxing out its percentage or ammo count by causing it to underflow.

To do this, you must open your inventory on the same frame that the weapon is registered as stolen. If done correctly, the item will be present but will have no percentage or ammo count. Selecting the item and killing the imp that stole it will maximize its percentage or ammo count.

    Trivia

    • One of the main reasons for the emulator of choice for speedrunning the original MediEvil to be ePSXe 2.0.0, is because the soldiers despawn glitch can only performed on this emulator, on this specific version.
