    * Always skip cutscenes in between levels. When you start a new level, hold {{B|START}} to skip the cutscene immediately as it starts.

    * When using the [[club]], use the Jump-Hit technique to save its durability. Press {{B|C}} to jump and then press {{B|X}} to hit. This technique is meant to avoid hitting the ground as well, spending an extra 1% durability.

The Any% category for MediEvil (1998) is the fastest and shortest category to speedrun.

The scope of this category is to simply complete the game as fast as possible with any percentage of completion. Collecting chalices, weapons, or completing all levels is not mandatory. You are allowed to use any known and unknown glitch.

    Rules

    1. Any use of the in-game cheat menu is prohibited.
    2. The timer starts upon pressing New Game in the main menu.
    3. The timer ends upon the final hit on Zarok.
    4. After killing Zarok, it must be possible for the credits to run. You do not have to play them in your submission on Speedrun.com, but it must be possible for them to roll.
    5. You are required to skip the dragon gate in The Gallows Gauntlet. You can decide to skip the dragon gate in any way possible.

    Platform

Runs on emulators and console have separate leaderboards. This is because some glitches can only be performed on emulators, and because the game runs slightly slower on consoles. Runners can specify the platform of their run upon submitting the recording.

For emulator runs, you can use any emulator you want, but most of the community uses ePSXe 2.0.0 because the game runs better than on other emulators, and because the Soldier despawn glitch works on this specific version of this emulator.

    Glitches and techniques used

Although all glitches are optional, except for skipping the Dragon Gate, most runners use several of them to obtain competitive times. The ones used in this category are:

In the level walkthroughs, some glitches are marked as (optional) and others are not. They are marked as such because they either save little time, or are more complex to perform than others. Those that are not marked as optional, are highly recommended to learn and perform to obtain competitive times, although, technically, they are optional too.

If you're not comfortable with glitches, you might want to look at the Any% Glitchless category instead.

    Common practices

For the Any% category, some practices are omitted in the level walkthroughs, but it is assumed that the player knows about them and uses them as needed. They are listed below:

    • Unless differently specified, avoid the enemies by jumping, moving around, or hitting them out of the way.
    • Always skip cutscenes in between levels. When you start a new level, hold START to skip the cutscene immediately as it starts.
    • When there's a dialog, skip it as quickly as you can by pressing Triangle button.
    • Once you gain the Daring Dash ability, the speed glitch becomes obsolete and no longer needs to be used. This means that from The Enchanted Earth level and beyond, you will always dash while running.
    • When using the club, use the Jump-Hit technique to save its durability. Press Circle button to jump and then press X button to hit. This technique is meant to avoid hitting the ground as well, spending an extra 1% durability.
    • The walkthroughs are the same for the emulator and console subcategories, unless differently specified.
