Book of Gallowmere

Bosses
Summary
At the top of a mountain high above the clouds stands an ominous castle. Inside, strange moving machinery maps out the stars and the planets in the sky. In a room further in, a menacing, wizened old man studies a book of spells. He is Zarok, an evil sorcerer thought long dead by the people of Gallowmere. Tonight, that will change... As the sun begins to set, the sorcerer grabs hold of his trident and heads out of the castle.
It is night when Zarok arrives at his destination - a cliff overlooking the local village. He raises his trident high into the sky and releases a blast of energy that locks the land in perpetual night. Emboldened, he heads down to the village. He stops when he gets to its centre. There, he casts his magics once more.
Bolts of green energy enter the houses and head straight for the occupants. Soon, the windows on the houses shatter and the blinds fly wide open as the souls of everyone in the village are drawn into the gem on the wizard's trident. The once peace-loving villagers are but shadows of their former selves; all that remains are soulless monsters.
His work in the village done, Zarok heads into the graveyard. The green energy he releases brings all to life. The dead of Gallowmere walk among the living once more...
Behind the scenes
Version specific differences
MediEvil (1999 Japanese original)
The cutscene is virtually unchanged safe for the number of fingers on human characters. Zarok and the villagers previously only had four fingers. In Japan, the number four can be pronounced the same way as the word for death (shi), making it an unlucky number. Additionally, Japan has a class of people suffering from discrimination known as the burakumin who worked in professions such as meat packing. They became associated with having four fingers due to work-related accidents. Later, a four-fingered hand gesture directed at another person came to mean that you were calling them burakumin. Depicting characters with four fingers thus became a sensitive issue in Japan.[1]
Interestingly, the zombie model already had five fingers even in the original version.
