MediEvil/Glitches
This page details some of the glitches found in MediEvil.
Inventory glitch
When a player presses SELECT, the inventory will open. This is used to select weapons and items. SELECT then closes the inventory again. If you open the inventory and then close it quickly (double tap), there is a brief window in which the player can input commands to allow you to move, jump, attack etc. When the inventory is open, Dan is invulnerable. This glitch is useful with regards to level looping, jacoghosting, soldiers despawning, and skipping Kardok.
Level looping
- Main article: Level looping
This glitch is widely used by speedrunners. There are multiple uses of level looping in the game. Some are used to skip to the exit of a level. Others are used to skip an enemy encounter or an area of a level which should be completed to progress.

Knockback dash
The club's power-up attack (pressing ) can be used on walls and certain objects to push Dan back. That, in conjunction with turning, the Daring Dash, and running, can increase Dan's speed much higher than normal. Performing the glitch requires high precision, therefore it is considered an advanced technique by speedrunnners and not recommended for beginners. This glitch is also known and referred to as KBD.
Super daggers
The Throwing Daggers's regular attack (pressing ) can be used in conjunction with the charged attack (holding
) to inflict more damage than normal. Every hit deals 15 points of damage. The only practical usage of this glitch is in the Stained Glass Demon fight at the end of the Hilltop Mausoleum level. Performing the glitch requires precise timing, therefore it is considered a more advanced technique by speedrunners, and not recommended for beginners. You can watch a video of this glitch being performed by Lalleruga on YouTube.
Super club
Similarly to the super daggers, the club's power-up attack (pressing ) can be used in conjunction with the regular attack (pressing
) to inflict more damage than normal. This glitch is commonly used on bosses in the game. It is difficult to perform due to the precise timing required. For this reason, it is considered a more advanced technique by speedrunners, and it is not recommended for beginners, who can use the much simpler jump-attack method instead. You can watch a video of this glitch being performed by Lalleruga on YouTube.
Jacoghosting
- Main article: Jacoghosting
This glitch can be performed in the Pools Of The Ancient Dead level in MediEvil (1998) and it is used to quickly complete the level.
Smuggling
Smuggling can be performed in any level in MediEvil (1998) and MediEvil (2019) and it consists into collecting items, such as Rune Stones, in one level to use them in another. Normally, key items are not meant to be used outside the level in which they are collected.
To perform the smuggling glitch in MediEvil (1998), starting from the map screen, you open the Save menu while quickly also starting the level. When performed properly, you will be able to confirm your intent to save as the screen fades to black to start the level. Upon the start of the level, you will get the rest of the save screens. Switching between menu items allows you to move Dan briefly. Continuously doing this allows you to move around the level and collecting items. When you collect the item that you want to smuggle, complete the save and quit the level to return to the main menu and reload the save you just created. You will be on the map screen again and you can now start another level with the item you collected before saving in your inventory.
This glitch is normally used in speedruns to smuggle the star rune from Dan's Crypt and use it to open the exit gate in The Gallows Gauntlet, allowing you to skip the dragon gate. You can watch this glitch being performed by NoobKillerRoof on MediEvil (1998) and by crash41596 on MediEvil (2019) on YouTube.
Dragon Gate Skip
The Dragon Gate Skip, or DGS, is one of the hardest glitches to perform in MediEvil (1998). There are 4 known ways to perform it:
- You can lure the mummy nearby to attack you in front of the gate. Sometimes, the attack allows you to clip through the gate. This method has been discontinued in favor of the other 3 methods because it is highly inconsistent and difficult to perform.
- You can use the Knockback Dash (KBD) glitch to launch yourself past the gate using a gap in the top left side of it. You can now collect the star rune and use the same gap with another KBD to leave the area. Effectively, you need to skip the gate twice.
- You can use the above mentioned gap to get past the gate, and then clip through the floor to reach the exit of the level. This method is known as Gallows Gauntlet Skip, or GGS.
- You can use the smuggling glitch to get the star rune from Dan's Crypt and use it in The Gallows Gauntlet's exit gate.
You can watch a video by NoobKillerRoof performing three of these methods on YouTube.
The DGS is highly precise and difficult, therefore is considered a very advanced technique by speedrunners. Beginners are recommended to use the rune smuggling to skip the gate.
Soldiers despawn
This glitch involves several steps, and it can be performed on MediEvil (1998) while using the emulator ePSXe 2.0.0. In Zarok's Lair, after entering the main circular room, approach the central area, and perform the inventory glitch. While closing the inventory and reopening it, move forward to step on the circular platform. If done properly, the Fazguls will not come out of the doors in the cutscene. After Zarok's speech, you need to close the inventory when the camera switches back to Dan. You can now continue the fight as usual, but only half the fazguls will spawn in the room, giving you a big advantage and not requiring to heal your soldiers at all.
During the fight, you have to stay within the lower half of the room. Moving in the top half will cause the rest of the soldiers to spawn while the battle is still ongoing.
As soon as the last fazgul dies, you must run into the top half and spawn the rest of the fazguls. Instead of fighting, they still start cheering with your soldiers, and you will have completed the glitch.
Although it is possible to perform most of this glitch on console or other emulators, when trying to complete it by spawning the rest of the soldiers, the game will crash unless using ePSXe 2.0.0. The reason why this happens is unknown, but it is speculated that it is caused by differences in how the memory is managed by the platform used.

Weapon replenishment
It is possible to perform a glitch after your weapon is stolen that involves tricking the game into maxing out its percentage or ammo count by causing it to underflow.
To do this, you must open your inventory on the same frame that the weapon is registered as stolen. If done correctly, the item will be present but will have no percentage or ammo count. Selecting the item and killing the imp that stole it will maximize its percentage or ammo count.
Trivia
- One of the main reasons for the emulator of choice for speedrunning MediEvil (1998) to be ePSXe 2.0.0, is because the soldiers despawn glitch can only performed on this emulator, on this specific version.
