Head Bangers, also known as Straight-Jacketed Crazies, were the mad patients of the Asylum.
History
14th century
Since the disappearance of the Head Monk of the Asylum, the patients were left to run amok. As they got in his way, Sir Daniel Fortesque was forced to kill them.
Gameplay
MediEvil (1998 original)
Official Strategy Guide entry
In addition to the Zombies and Ghouls we've come to know and love, you'll meet the straight-jacketed crazy. These guys are amped on adrenaline and, most likely, a concoction of Asylum "vitamins." Where's nurse Ratchet when you need her? Just keep whacking at 'em with your weapons, until they clear out.[1]
Strategy
The asylum patients are insane enemies that run around while laughing, trying to hit Dan with their own heads. They can be easily defeated with a hammer or club.
MediEvil: Resurrection
An Adventurer's Guide to Monsters entry
It is well known fact that one should try to sympathise with (and not detest or fear) the lunatic madmen of Gallowmere asylum, however after suffering an endless volley of painful head butts from these lead balloon headed nutters it would be easy to take issue with such well meaning advice. Should an adventurer take exception to their barbaric behaviour he might be well advised to utilize melee weapons to dispatch them, as projectiles seem to have little effect on these fast moving loons.[2][2.1]
MediEvil (2019 remake)
Book of Gallowmere entry
With the disappearance of the head monk, these patients have been left to run amok.
We don't know exactly what it was that sent them raving mad. Perhaps it was magic, perhaps the moon, or perhaps they were all licking toads. Truly, you should NOT lick those toads.[3][3.1]
Behind the scenes
Development
In early versions of the game such as the MediEvil Rolling Demo and the MediEvil ECTS Pre-Alpha, Head Bangers appeared in The Asylum Grounds level.[4][5] They were eventually removed from the level and placed in the new version of Inside The Asylum.
The Head Bangers in these early versions also had a facial texture. The texture is very similar to the face of Zarok's Beast Transformation, meaning that one was likely based on the other.
Their facial texture is missing in all final versions of the game. The exact reason for its removal is unknown. It may have been removed to reduce the performance impact of having too many of the enemies on screen, or it was simply removed by mistake.
