The Skull Key unlocked the Skull Gates which separated the Necropolis from the world of the living.

History

In 1386, the Skull Key was in the possession of the Stained Glass Demon. Sir Daniel Fortesque became its owner after defeating the demon. He used it to unlock the Skull Gates.

Characteristics

Appearance

The Skull Key was a simple key with a small skull on its bow. Some accounts describe the skull as fairly real looking, whilst others indicate it was metallic with ruby eyes and gold teeth.

Gameplay

The key is required to unlock the Skull Gates, which are the only way out of the Graveyard. It is dropped by the Stained Glass Demon in The Hilltop Mausoleum after its defeat.

The key needs to be used in the Return to the Graveyard level. It has no effect in The Graveyard level.

MediEvil (1998 original)

If the player defeats the demon after the key's already been collected, the demon will drop a moneybag instead.

MediEvil (2019 remake)

Unlike in the original game, it is possible to get a duplicate Skull Key. To obtain it, Dan must defeat the Stained Glass Demon after using the Skull Key to unlock the Skull Gates. This second key will not be usable, as the Skull Gates are permanently unlocked. It is not possible to obtain any more keys afterwards, as the demon will drop a moneybag whilst a Skull Key is in the inventory.

Behind the scenes

MediEvil (1998 original)

The Skull Key was a later addition to the game as it did not exist in early versions like the MediEvil Rolling Demo or the MediEvil ECTS Pre-Alpha.

The Lake Key, an unused item, uses the Skull Key icon, likely as a placeholder. The Lake Key can only be obtained using cheats in pre-release versions of the game.

MediEvil: Resurrection

The Skull Key was replaced by the Stain Glass Key. This is purely a visual change, as the key is obtained and used in exactly the same ways.
