Rats were harmless critters found on the streets, in basements, and other underground locations of Gallowmere and London. Gallowmere's rats were ruled by Rat King Derok in the late 14th century.

Gameplay

MediEvil

Rats are encountered in the Pumpkin Serpent and the Sleeping Village. Smashing them will reward Sir Dan with 1 or 2G.

Book of Gallowmere entry

These rats seem harmless, but they have tiny fingers and they’re probably plotting something terrible.

Each rat you squish is an act of treason against the mighty rat king Derok.[2][2.1]

MediEvil 2

Rats are very much the same 500 years later, but will attack Dan when he assumes Dan-hand form.

MediEvil: Resurrection

Smashing rats in levels bears no rewards. However, they are central to the Lazy Farm mini game Vermin Control where players can earn a Carnival Token for completing all challenges.

Behind the scenes

Development

According to Chris Sorrell, the rats in MediEvil were only made squishable two months prior to the game's release, after its lead programmer (who loved rats) left due to creative differences.[3]

Rats were also set to appear in The Graveyard level in an older incarnation of MediEvil.
