"Ah Herr Fortesque - you are back on the battlefield, yah? Zis is good."
― Karl Sturnguard, addressing Sir Dan.

Karl Sturnguard was a legendary hero who carried only his shield into battle. He was a contemporary and friend of Dirk Steadfast.

History

Life and death

Karl Sturnguard spent most of his formative years under siege at his family castle. With his impregnable magic shield Sturnguard's motto was 'the best form of attack is defense.' Sadly his shield couldn't protect him from poor eating habits and he died during a post battle feast while swallowing a large sausage he had failed to chew.

Afterlife

Having lived a heroic life, Sturnguard was granted access to the afterlife's Hall of Heroes after death.

Legacy

Karl's statue in 1886.

A headless statue of Sturnguard was on display at the Museum in Kensington, London, in 1886. It was in a room with statues of his fellow Hall of Heroes residents - RavenHooves the Archer and Megwynne Stormbinder.

Characteristics

Karl was a man fully clad in armour. He wore a dark blue surcoat over it which depicted a cross.

Gameplay

MediEvil

After Sir Dan collects nine Chalices, he will be able to claim the Gold Shield from Sturnguard. However, two other options will be available at the same time, including Bloodmonath Skull Cleaver's Axe and RavenHooves the Archer's Flaming Longbow. Whatever isn't claimed first will be available on subsequent visits.

Later, after Dan collects his eighteenth Chalice, Sturnguard will reward him with four chests of gold.

MediEvil: Resurrection

Once Sir Dan's collected six Chalices, he can claim the Gold Shield from Karl Sturnguard. After Dan collects his final Chalice, he can visit Sturnguard again to receive a Health Bottle.

Behind the scenes

Development

MediEvil: Resurrection

Strangely, the shield Karl has in cutscenes is different from the Gold Shield that Dan can wield and is more reminiscent of the Silver Shield.

Name

"Karl" is the German and Scandinavian form of Charles.[1] It is said to have been derived from a Common Germanic noun karlaz meaning "free man", which survives in English as churl, which developed its deprecating sense in the Middle English period. An alternative theory states that it is derived from the common Germanic element hari meaning 'army, warrior'.[2]

Portrayal

Karl is meant to be German, as he says "Herr Fortesque" when addressing Dan, and also because of his use of the word "nein" in place of "no."
